[Naples/2 August 2010] — John Smarge, of Naples, was introduced during the Rotary International (RI) Convention in Montréal, Canada as part of the team which will determine the global service organization’s policies and programs, beginning 1 July 2010 through 30 June 2012.
Smarge is one of 18 Rotary leaders worldwide serving as a director for two years. During his term as a director, he will focus on leading Rotary’s Haiti Relief efforts in rebuilding schools and providing affordable housing.
Under the leadership of Rotary International’s President Ray Klinginsmith, from the Rotary Club of Kirksville, Missouri, USA, Smarge will help implement the global theme, “Building Communities -- Bridging Continents.” As a member of the RI Board, Smarge will help lead Rotary’s 33,000 clubs with their 1.2 million members in 200 countries and geographical areas. He will also encourage clubs to focus their activities on projects addressing humanitarian needs around the world.
John Smarge has been a resident of Naples since 1981 and is the President of Ray the Mover the local North American Van Lines agency. A Rotarian since 1982, Smarge has served Rotary International as President of The Rotary Club of Naples and as District Governor for the 52 clubs in Southwest Florida. In addition to his Rotary involvement, Smarge has served on the Board of the YMCA, Shelter for Abused Women and The Boy Scouts of America.

To date, Rotary has contributed more than US$900 million and countless volunteer hours to the protection of more than two billion children in 122 countries.
